Rolling U & C-Channels: UPN and UPE Sections
The pass schedule that turns a billet into the U-shaped channels used as purlins, chassis members and frame components.

U and C-channels (UPN / UPE) are produced on long-product mills using box and open passes that progressively deepen the U-shape while controlling flange angle and web thickness.
UPN vs UPE
UPN sections have tapered (sloped) flange interiors — the original 19th-century European profile. UPE sections have parallel flanges, simpler to bolt and weld, and are increasingly specified in modern construction. Saffron Steel supplies both series.
Process Highlights
Reheated billet → roughing box passes → progressive U-pass deepening → finishing pass that defines web thickness and flange geometry → cooling bed → straightener → cold saw → bundle.
Quality
Dimensional tolerances per EN 10279. Mill test certificates accompany each heat.
Steel Channels
U and C-section channels for structural framing.
