Custom Sourcing: How Project Steel Procurement Works

What goes into sourcing specialty grades, custom dimensions and high-volume project supply across European, Asian and Middle Eastern mills.

Structural Steel & Custom Sourcing

Beyond stock products, every major project has at least one line item that cannot be picked off the shelf — an unusual grade, an odd size, a tight delivery window. Custom sourcing is a structured procurement discipline, not an ad-hoc enquiry.

1. Technical Definition

Saffron Steel works with the consultant and contractor to lock down the technical scope — grade equivalents, dimensional tolerances, surface condition, marking, third-party inspection requirements (BV, SGS, TÜV) and documentation expectations (MTC EN 10204 3.1 vs 3.2).

2. Mill Selection

Based on the spec, we shortlist mills from our network across Europe, India, China, Korea, Japan and the GCC. Each shortlist weighs metallurgical capability, lead time, freight economics and historical quality performance for that specific product.

3. Inquiry, Negotiation & Order

RFQs are issued in parallel, returns are normalised onto a like-for-like basis (price + freight + financing + lead time + warranty), and the order is placed with the mill offering the best total landed value — not just the lowest unit price.

4. Production Monitoring

We track the order through casting, rolling and finishing milestones, schedule third-party inspection if required, and review MTCs against spec before shipment is released.

5. Logistics & Site Delivery

Sea freight is consolidated where possible, customs clearance handled by our Jebel Ali team, and last-mile delivery scheduled in coordination with the site's craneage and storage windows — including just-in-time deliveries to congested urban projects.
